A letter from Bonginkosi Mabaso, Chief Executive Officer

Bonginkosi Mabaso, Founder and CEO of Ann-Connect

Born from a connectivity failure. Built for a connected future.

In 2020, during the COVID‑19 pandemic, I was preparing to write an online examination when my internet connection failed — just 15 minutes before the exam was due to begin. My connection only returned 25 minutes after the examination had already started. I remember asking myself a simple question: How many other students are experiencing this? And then a bigger one: What happens to students who live in communities where reliable internet is not something they can simply depend on?

That moment became the beginning of Ann‑Connect. We started with a simple belief: education should not stop because the internet does. We set out to build technology that would allow students to continue participating in digital examinations even when connectivity was unreliable or unavailable. Over time, that vision grew, and so did the problem we wanted to solve.

We realised that connectivity failures do not only affect education. Universities, businesses, governments and communities increasingly depend on digital systems to operate, collaborate and communicate. When connectivity fails, critical activities can come to a standstill. We believe technology should be designed differently — technology that can continue working and keep people moving even when conventional internet connectivity is unavailable.

Today, Ann‑Connect is evolving beyond offline education. We are building a resilient technology platform spanning assessment, invigilation, collaboration and AI, with a broader vision of enabling people, devices and organisations to remain productive and connected in challenging connectivity environments.

Our vision is to build a future where connectivity is not defined simply by access to the internet, but by the ability to stay connected when the internet fails. Education is where we started, but it is not where we intend to stop. We want to help create a world where a poor connection, network outage or lack of infrastructure does not automatically mean that people and organisations have to stop.

There is still a long road ahead, and we know we are only getting started. But the question that inspired Ann‑Connect remains at the heart of everything we do: What if technology could keep working when connectivity doesn’t?

That is the future we are building.
